Encoding-inspired design for Portuguese artist’s exploratory work.

With this work, the Portuguese artist Miguel Palma explores the diverse desert landscapes between Phoenix and Albuquerque, cataloguing imagery along the way.
We were requested to design the graphic identity for this project.

Our approach was based on the idea of encoding. During our research we consulted the insignia used by NASA for space missions and revisited the drawings of Ladislav Stunar. We proposed a logo with geometric letters and in the centre a star evokes the sun and a desert cactus. The essay discusses the edge of the solar system and gravity.

The logo was included on multiple supports, objects that were part of the journey of exploration of the artist and that integrate the exhibitions, including a transformed military truck, suitcases, a flag and a costume designed by the artist.

The project is developed in partnership with the ASU – School of Earth and Space Exploration and other community partners, and commissioned by ASU Art.
